Cross-dressing and fetishism no longer diseases in Sweden

Sexual behaviours such as cross-dressing, fetishism and sadomasochism will be taken off the “medical conditions” list in Sweden as from 2009, according to the National Welfare and Health Authority in Stockholm.

“We know that these codes for classification are often seen as references to  health conditions, regardless of their real meaning”, according to the institution’s director, Lars-Erik Holm.

“That was somewhat unfortunate, since it contributed to the reinforcing of prejudices within society, increasing the risk of stigmatization for many people,” Holm added.

Sara Lind, the Swedish drag queen, applauded the decision in an interview with the Dagens Hyheter daily.

Meanwhile, transsexuality, exhibitionism, voyeurism and paedophilia will remain as medically diagnosable conditions in Sweden, where homosexuality is no longer a disease since 1979.
