Cross-dressing and fetishism no longer diseases in Sweden
Sexual behaviours such as cross-dressing, fetishism and sadomasochism will be taken off the “medical conditions” list in Sweden as from 2009, according to the National Welfare and Health Authority in Stockholm.
“We know that these codes for classification are often seen as references to health conditions, regardless of their real meaning”, according to the institution’s director, Lars-Erik Holm.
“That was somewhat unfortunate, since it contributed to the reinforcing of prejudices within society, increasing the risk of stigmatization for many people,” Holm added.
Sara Lind, the Swedish drag queen, applauded the decision in an interview with the Dagens Hyheter daily.
Meanwhile, transsexuality, exhibitionism, voyeurism and paedophilia will remain as medically diagnosable conditions in Sweden, where homosexuality is no longer a disease since 1979.

It is really absurd that, while homosexuality is no longer regarded as a disease in Sweden (happily, of course!), transsexuality instead is. This I really can't understand
Well
I don't think it's because they think that wanting to be a woman is sick, but more because people want to be women so badly that they are ready to undergo all the difficult treatments that that involves (hormones, sex change, boobs, chin reductions, laser hair removal, etc.) Most transsexuals themselves would admit that the way they were born was "a mistake", and they need doctors to correct it.
the issue is more complicated than that. they cannot treat ambitions or a determined wish as sickness. it is treated as a sickness because of its effect on identity, compulsive behaviour and mental state. but all these effects are replaced with a simple surgery. the issue here is watt do we consider a self image derangement. anyway studies at brain level have shown that the issue of transgender is not a psychological one, it’s a biological one. and I have to say that al doe all of transsexual know they are of the other gender(their brain scan show exactly the same results), and wish to have that body, they can accept life as it is, and are not forced in depression and compulsive behaviour. and this is the main reason why it is not a sickness. of course today we can fix everything with a rather simple surgery. the issue here is that in a society that is compulsive hetero-centric and gender fixated, to accept that life, our body and brains, minds, sexuality and gender expression is variable, can be difficult. but this would make these people who are obsessed with heterosexuality’s normality in need for a serious treatment.

Oh yeah I suppose that is a valid point, but still, it's like telling someone with Down's syndrome that he should be happy because he's not sick, he just has an extra chromosome.
This girl, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7S5usRgY720 , who I find amazing, is not sick, but that's because her parents have acted very quickly, before she can be traumatized or get her identity all messed up.
You can't say it's just "a simple surgery"... it's a serious medical procedure. And if the sex change happens after adulthood there are several painful and expensive operations that you need to undergo in order to look like a real woman, which is what you want as a transsexual.
So I'm not saying they've got mental issues, but they need surgeons and endocrinologists in order to be who they want to be, however unfortunate that is.
thank you for reminding us all that all medical procedures are serious. but I have to say that your parallel between transgender people and people with Down’s syndrome is the only unfortunate thing. and luckily I don’t have to tell anyone how to be happy with watt they have, they deal with it on their own and some who need help with guidance from professionals. and it is obvious that the majority of transsexual where able to live with their reality for thousands of years, just as some of us(gay men) that where visible in the past where locked up in mental clinics, some of us commit suicide, other gay men suffer from serious identity issues and depressions, many want and believe they can change if they really want to, so they undergo “treatments”, get married to women etc. for a long time this was the only reality known by people, society and medical society about gay men. just a few decades ago no one could have imagined men marrying each other, having a family, being open and successful from politics to science, etc. now is the time to stop this ignorant attitude that is just the same as we have experienced, today we can do more, and transgender people should have the same right to normality because today we have many possibilities, that can help, and we are smarter.
